We are looking for a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to lead hardware integration on robots and vehicles. Staer’s spatial intelligence uses cameras and runs on edge-compute hardware mounted on forklifts, trucks, and mobile robots operating in live logistics environments. Every deployment starts with hardware that has to be mounted, powered, and installed right the first time.
You will own the physical layer of the platform: from designing and prototyping the attachments that hold sensors and edge computers to installing reliable systems at customer sites. Your work decides how fast deployments scale for the customer.
This role is based in Sweden, with a strong preference for candidates located in the Skåne area.
What the role covers
- Design and prototype hands-on: develop camera rigs, sensor mounts, brackets, and enclosures. Move quickly from CAD to physical builds, test on real vehicles, and iterate using workshop trials and feedback from customer installations.
- Engineer for tough operating conditions: select materials, dimensions, fasteners, and tolerances to withstand vibration, impacts, fatigue, temperature changes, dust, and washdowns. Validate critical assumptions through calculations and practical testing.
- Turn prototypes into manufactured kits: standardize parts, fastening patterns, and cable routing. Own the material, process, tolerance, and supplier decisions that take a prototype to fleet volume at a sensible cost and weight.
- Own customer installations end to end: conduct site surveys, plan and perform mounting, cabling, power integration, and commissioning. Troubleshoot on-site and adapt designs to real vehicle and facility constraints, delivering clean, safe installations on schedule.
- Make installations repeatable: turn field experience into installation documentation, checklists, and kits that other installers can use reliably.
- Work with the edge hardware team: resolve vehicle power (12–48V), thermal, connector, and cable-strain requirements for compute and camera enclosures.
- Support the installed fleet: handle retrofits, repairs, and hardware revisions driven by what real operations break.
What it takes
- 5+ years of hands-on mechanical experience—mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or equivalent practical experience building and installing physical products.
- CAD proficiency and practical experience designing, building, and refining prototypes, with a clear understanding of manufacturing methods and constraints.
- Experience with mechanical sizing and verification: load cases, stiffness, fatigue, bolted joints, and tolerance stack-ups. Sound judgment about when calculations, simulation, or physical testing are needed.
- Experience taking a mechanical product from prototype into series production, including supplier selection, first-article inspection, and design changes driven by cost and manufacturability.
- Proven hands-on experience installing equipment on industrial vehicles or at industrial customer sites, including fitting and adjusting mounts, routing and securing cables, and commissioning. Comfortable troubleshooting on-site.
- Working knowledge of low-voltage electrical integration: vehicle power, fusing, connectors, and clean cable routing.
- Deep technical curiosity—a drive to understand how things work, investigate why they fail, and explore better ways to design and build them.
- Forklift familiarity and workplace/vehicle safety awareness, including CE marking and warehouse safety practices, are a plus.
- Comfortable working on-site at customer facilities and traveling across Europe.
